Our Story

We believe prevention is the best cure.  In the current cost of living crisis, now more than ever, we need to support the health and wellbeing of children growing up in low socio-economic neighbourhoods. These children are more likely to be exposed to stress and experience social hardship. They are at greater risk of mental ill-health and becoming overweight and obese. They are vulnerable to initiation of illicit drugs, alcohol consumption and other risky behaviours. Engaging and working with children on the cusp of adolescence is vital to promote healthful behaviours and stop the cycle of intergenerational disadvantage.

Active In-Betweens is a free, healthy lifestyle program for 8-12-year-olds. We currently run it across 5 different community settings across the Illawarra. It is designed to build community connection and increase children’s self-esteem, social skills, and resilience. It provides children with the opportunity to:

• Connect positively with peers and supportive adults;

• Learn about interpersonal behaviours that contribute to good health and positive self-esteem;

• Engage with positive social and neighbourhood connection opportunities (e.g. youth services, local sporting clubs);

• Eat, grow and learn about healthy food; and

• Participate in structured and unstructured play and physical activity.

This is one of our most popular and loved programs!  Your contributions help to improve the health and wellbeing of local disadvantaged children, equipping them with the right tools to lead a happy and healthy life – particularly as they transition to high school.
